Project Description

Motivation
Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are also having an impact on telecommunications networks. Among other things, AI enables networks to adapt flexibly to meet changing demands for speed and availability. It also paves the way for new network-based services that improve security, quality or energy efficiency.
But this comes at a price: these innovative AI-based capabilities need to be organised, kept up to date and coordinated so that they can be used to their full potential. However, there is as yet no suitable body to oversee this.
Objectives and approach
This is where the “KIOps6G” project comes in: the aim of the project is to develop a platform for AI management in telecommunications networks, specifically tailored to the requirements of future 6G networks. The project focuses on the development and testing of a system architecture for this platform, taking into account aspects of scalability, distributed implementation and the ability to respond flexibly to changing requirements. To this end, the platform utilises a distributed control system, which is explicitly designed to incorporate both AI functions for network management and AI-based services that will be available to customers in the long term. In addition, dedicated AI hardware will be integrated to enhance performance. The platform will ultimately be implemented as a demonstrator and evaluated in a real-world setting.
Innovations and prospects
The telecommunications network of the future can only become society’s true digital nervous system through integrated AI capabilities. With the planned platform, the project is contributing to the systematic management of these capabilities. This will lay the groundwork for efficient, intelligent and reliable 6G networks and establish the foundation for the development of an ecosystem comprising AI developers, AI users and network operators.
